Ireland to EU: "No" [update]
European leaders now claim that the EU treaty of Lisbon is still
alive, despite clear language that showed it became a dead issue on
Friday. Voters in Ireland pronounced an emphatic "no" to the Lisbon accord.
Every one of the EU's member states had to agree to the treaty
for it to to be put into effect. Interestingly, only Ireland's citizens
were even given a chance to vote on the Lisbon document. Elsewhere,
governments and parliaments have choked off dissent with claims that a
"no" vote would be a humiliation for their country.
Throughout the EU, political leaders are now asking themselves one of two questions. The intelligent ones are asking how they dare continue talking about the Lisbon treaty, when their citizens are likely dead set against the EU. The irresponsible politicians are simply plotting to get around their own voters' opinions. It is very important to note that, the more Irish voters Irish voters learned about the proposed treaty, the more they opposed it.
